Our Story

[ a letter from the founder ]

Our story is one of great serendipity and gratitude. During my tenure as a Global Village Team Leader for Habitat for Humanity in 2008 and 2009, I had the good fortune to travel to communities around the world fighting for survival. I observed them committing amazing feats to ensure their continued existence with incredibly limited resources, but with love in their hearts. Their unflagging spirits are the inspiration for our organization. They are our role models. It is because of our experiences around the world, in the presence of people who accomplish much with very little, that we felt inspired to mobilize a support community here in the USA.

As a child my parents impressed upon me to be a person of my word. In my life I have made many promises that I have been and still am dedicated to fulfilling. Most important of all is the pledge that I made to myself; to keep my promises to others and to help others when I could. Now, instead of looking at a problem and thinking, someone should fix that I am finally taking a stand and saying, “we can fix that.” I’m taking all my experience from more than 15 years in the field of community development to actively try to fix problems where solutions can be found.

Though I didn’t know it then, I began this mission as a child. By the time I’d accepted the “call” and began developing this organization one year ago, my burden seemed heavy and at times overwhelming. And then there was serendipity. People began to help me help others. Some donated their time, others offered their talent, and many others gave money. As soon as I would discover a need, I would almost as quickly find an open hand and heart. My load was lessened because of the generosity of my friends, family, and colleagues. In the course of a year, we forged our own community of courage. It is a community based on a fearless interdependence and a commitment to helping.  Together we are spreading our wings to answer the call that was set before us.

But our story is not complete. Even now chapters are being written in villages and towns around the world. My hope is that in the end our story will be one of more survival than defeat, more joy than sadness, and more hope than despair. We hope that you will join us in our commitment to fulfilling this work.

Thank you.
